Who are The Carpentries?

The Carpentries is a global community of instructors who teach workshops on essential coding and data science skills geared explicitly for researchers. The workshop curricula are collaboratively built and maintained by this highly motivated community.

The UCLA Carpentries team

At UCLA, we have a growing community of instructors that organize and hold workshops throughout the year for faculty, staff, and students across campus. Our team is filled with librarians, research facilitators, technologists, graduate students, post-docs and scholars across various departments.

Why should you consider becoming an instructor at UCLA?

  • The instructor certification training process is an excellent way to learn more about pedagogy and grow your skills (soft and technical).
  • The training process is a great chance to get more comfortable with public speaking in a safe environment, with plenty of opportunities to learn and get feedback from your peers.
  • Build your skills! Teaching is one of the best ways to expand your knowledge, and the design of the Carpentries workshops allows you to explore new technologies and grow your comfort and understanding.
  • A Carpentries Instructor Certification is excellent to include on your resume.
  • Meet and collaborate with other instructors on campus, across the UC and the world!
  • We have a lot of fun! We learn from each other, groan at silly puns and are incredibly supportive of each member!
  • It’s free! The UCLA Library Data Science Center pays for this training and community.
